THE NEED

Memphis has a disturbing rate of homicide and other crimes of violence. However, reducing the rate of violent crime, while critically important, does not lessen the impact of that violence on those directly affected.

For every person that is murdered}, one expert estimates {there are at least 7 to 10 primary survivors who experience the traumatic grief of losing a loved one to homicide

These survivors included children, adult relatives, significant others and friends who not only grieve for the victims, but may find their lives complicated by criminal investigations, an unfamiliar criminal justice process, media attention, unanticipated financial costs and the shattering of long held beliefs. In the mid-South, many of these survivors, as well as victims of other violent crimes, are more likely to turn to the faith community for information, counseling and support.
